CSS Frameworks

Overview

In this module we were paired with another student to do a presentation on CSS Frameworks. We also explored the difference between preprocessors and frameworks. We shared our Showcase websites with our classmates and asked for suggestion on improvement. Taking those suggestions into consideration, we completed the work on our Showcase websites.

Description

The framework my partner and I were assigned was Bulma. We downloaded, installed, and used Bulma to creat a responsive website and explored the advantages and disadvantages to Bulma. We then put our experiences and findings into a presentation, which you can access below.

Reflection

Holy smokes - FRAMEWORKS! What a revelation, so easy and fast to use. I can tell I will be exploring these more over the Summer. It took me a little bit to get everything loaded - the instructions were not enitirely clear. I searched online and found some step-by-step intructions to help me get Bulma installed. I found and used this 15 part Bulma CSS Tutorial to help create the sample page. I am head over heels with how easy frameworks are!

Class Reflection Statement

Overall this was a great class! It had a huge amount of information to cover and I felt like I was drowning at some points, but it all worked out and I know I am better equipped in CSS3 now. (I do think it could be split into two classes to better explore everything CSS3 has to offer. Some topics I feel could have had more time for better understanding.) Flexbox and Grid are great tools and much easier than float, more powerful and intuitive tools compared to the often frustrating complexities of using floats for layout. I plan to learn more about them over the break (some of the many items on my to-do list).

CSS3 is ever evolving and I can see the benefit to keeping up, the changes make the process much quicker. The new features being introduced are clearly geared towards streamlining the development process and creating responsive designs with greater speed. I'm especially interested in the exploration of new styling that could reduce the need for JavaScript workarounds and container queries that could offer more control over layouts.
